THE INSTALLATION

Working around the client, and the ground.

For our client’s catering operation at Latitude Festival, VCS supplied two 2.4 m walk-in freezers and one 4.8 m walk-in fridge. The rooms were lined up facing one another, right next to the catering tent, keeping chilled and frozen supplies close to the team.

All three rooms came with racking, giving the catering team organised storage and clear access to their stock.

On site when the client needed us.

The installation took place in the evening to fit around our client’s requirements. With a long drive home afterwards, it meant a late-night return for the team—but making the setup work for the client was the priority.

Using a delayed start productively.

Flooring was still being laid when the team arrived, which delayed the start of the build. The team used that time to review the plans with the client and begin unloading, so the preparation could progress while the site work continued.

Raising the fridge to the pathway.

The client wanted the 4.8 m fridge raised onto the pathway. This required substantial packing beneath the floor to bring it level and provide support throughout. The support arrangement was worked around the requested position and the uneven ground.

Working with the on-site electrician.

The power installation was not yet fully set up. The team worked with the on-site electrician to obtain temporary power, allowing the refrigeration motors to be checked and the temperature settings to be set. This enabled those checks to take place while the wider power setup was still being completed.

What this means when planning a festival installation.

Coordinate the cold room build with flooring contractors and the site electrician. If a room needs to meet a raised pathway, discuss the height and ground conditions early so the floor support can be planned as part of the installation.
